Have CEO’s become too publicly involved in politics?

Prescott Valley, AZ Correspondent-Corporate executive officers (CEO’s) have become too publicly involved in politics, particularly those who have taken on hotbed issues that have affected Americans in less than positive ways. Rather than looking at those issues from the standpoint of the Constitution and the laws that govern the nation, they support issues that are unfavorable to the lives of everyday Americans. The NFL recently warned the state of Texas that a proposal to limit transgender access to bathrooms could impact future decisions about the location of major sporting events. Is this nothing more than political blackmail? Should organizations/big businesses be allowed to pursue public policy agendas at the expense of fans/consumers?

Prescott Valley, AZ Correspondent-It is nothing more than political blackmail, and organizations like the NFL should not be allowed to pursue public policy agendas at the expense of fans, consumers and state laws that make policies on behalf of citizen majorities.

The idea that the NFL and other organizations and businesses should make or greatly influence policy is ludicrous. As NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy recently stated, “If a proposal that is discriminatory or inconsistent with our values were to become law there (Texas) that would certainly be a factor considered when thinking about awarding future events.”

Texas Governor Abbott responded to McCarthy’s remark by saying, “For some low-level NFL adviser to come out and say that they are going to micromanage and try to dictate to the state of Texas what types of policies we’re going to pass in our state, that’s unacceptable,” and he is right, it is unacceptable. With recent comments made by Madonna, should the Feds hold Hollywood figures to the same standards as everyone else and seek potentially criminal charges?

Owatonna, MN Correspondent– After listening and watching Madonna’s entire speech at the recent Women’s March on Washington, I came away from it thinking the speech was lackluster and devoid of real passion or intensity. Yes, she did drop a few F-bombs and said she’d thought about “blowing up the White House.” Other than that, it could have been a generic speech from almost any member of any minority that has been oppressed in one way or another. Does Jared Kushner’s appointment by President Trump present a conflict of interest?

Gastonia, NC Correspondent-Back in the ‘70s, my father took a job as the assistant superintendent of education for the state of Louisiana. Shortly after he was hired, his boss went to prison for various corruption schemes. That man’s successor was an absolute study in Louisiana politics at its finest. Within seven months of his having taking office, every single one of his immediate family members, along with a goodly number of cousins, aunts and uncles, had been given jobs with the state. President Obama recently claimed that race relations have improved in America. Have they, or have they not improved?

Sheffield, Jamaica Correspondent-President Obama is a tremendous persona and as black as I am, I’d love to agree with him. However, at this moment, I need to take the back bench. America is what it is.

When I think of disloyal, pompous, and backbiting individuals, America comes to mind. Don’t get me wrong, there are so many decent and morally prosperous people residing in America, but the majority is spray paint. Everyone seems happy and friendly, until your back is turned. Continue reading

Is there a double standard for sexual harassment?

Prescott Valley, AZ Correspondent-There does appear to be a double standard concerning sexual harassment.  It seems that now the reverse is happening with women towards men.  As women move more and more into the corporate world and are exposed to larger numbers of people and situations in the workplace, the instances of sexual harassment towards men are more likely to occur. Will the recent protest marches against President Trump by millions of women across the country re-energize the Women’s Rights Movement to the level of influence possessed in the 1960s and 1970s?

Owatonna, MN Correspondent-The women’s lib, or women’s rights movement was a major engine for social change as the Baby Boom generation came of age. Virtually overnight, women began to lobby and protest for abortion rights, equal pay for equal work, access to sports activities via Title IX, and freedom from their subservient role in our male-dominated society. Combined with the Civil Rights movement and anti-war protesting, the Women’s Rights movement precipitated one of the most radical shifts in cultural awareness in our history.

Symposium 2016: The Senate Judiciary has conducted hearings on the proposed merger between AT&T and Time Warner (owner of CNN). Is this a viable merger and will it influence the press/media and democracy in years to come?

Prescott Valley, AZ Correspondent- If the AT&T and Time Warner merger does materialize, it would represent a large concentration of power between a distributor (AT&T) and a maker/ creator of content (Time Warner). The merger is not one in which two warring companies want to merge to reduce competition as AT&T has already tried that  when it attempted to buy T-Mobile in 2011, and was stopped by the federal government.  Continue reading

Symposium 2016: Minimum wage laws were passed in a number of states during the last election to raise the minimum wage to at least $10 an hour, and a national campaign has been initiated to institute a $15 an hour minimum. Will these increases be detrimental to jobs and job security?

Myrtle Beach, SC Correspondent- Will it hurt job security? I would say probably. Here is the issue here, rather than paying their workers a higher dollar amount some companies will probably just automate their process more. Companies who can’t afford to automate will either pay the going rate, slim down their company, put more people on salary and work them harder, or close. There are too many scenarios here. Symposium 2016: Former Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman cautions that the Democratic Party needs to find a leader who will keep it from being completely overtaken by the far left wing of the party. Should tried and true Democrats prevent this kind of takeover, or should they simply let the party further deteriorate into something far more left wing?

Owatonna, MN Correspondent- As we’ve seen with the Republican party in recent years, change in party philosophy begins more at the grassroots level than with party leadership. The core Republican is now much more conservative than he or she was a few decades ago. And we shouldn’t forget that back in the first half of the 20th Century, Republicans were the more dovish of the two major parties, reluctant to go to war during both World Wars. Continue reading
