At the present, sanctuary cities continue to receive such funding, and it is the state and federal government’s responsibility to see that funds are barred from being distributed to any sanctuary city. According to a study conducted by the Pew Hispanic Center, there are approximately 11.2 million illegal immigrants currently living in the United States. While some politicians insist that the U.S. government should offer amnesty to illegal immigrants, most people agree that the U.S. should take tougher measures to deter people from entering the country illegally in the future. In a study funded by the German Marshall Fund, more than half of Americans polled believed that current illegal immigrants should be offered a path to legal residency, but over 80% insisted that the U.S. should have better border controls and stronger punishments for individuals and companies who employ illegal immigrants.
