Gastonia, NC Correspondent — Help Wanted in a window and a federal supplement that still competes with a shift isn’t a mystery of the human soul. It’s a residual with a date on it.
Reservation wages can move. People who spent a year staring at a kitchen table may want more money or a different schedule permanently. That’s possible and it isn’t proven while two props are still standing.
The props are the extra federal payment and a school year that hasn’t reliably resumed. Move both and see what wage still won’t clear.
We have a natural experiment running right now — about half the states ended the supplement early in June. In a few months we’ll be able to compare them against the states that didn’t. That comparison is the answer and it doesn’t exist yet.
Owatonna, MN Correspondent — A small town can see the warehouse sign and the dining room sign and know they’re different markets.
Warehouses are tight because demand is tight. Dining rooms are tight because the room was closed, the supplement was generous, and the child was home.
Reservation wages do shift after a shock, and this one included deaths, early retirements, and a year of not commuting. There’s a demographic piece that isn’t a policy residual at all: a substantial number of people over fifty-five retired earlier than they’d planned and most of them aren’t coming back.
That’s the durable part and it’s smaller than the headline. The rest is a statute and a calendar.
Myrtle Beach, SC Correspondent — This coast is the exhibit. Rooms need housekeepers and housekeepers had a supplement, a closed school, and a year of being told the work was non-essential until the tourist returned.
Mostly residual, with a scar.
The scar is real and it’s specific here. A lot of our workforce is seasonal and international — the visa programs that staff this coast every summer were disrupted for two years, and the workers who used to come built other arrangements.
That isn’t a reservation wage story at all. It’s a supply story caused by a border and a consulate, and it gets folded into a debate about whether Americans want to work.
Clermont, FL Correspondent — Parks hire thousands and still can’t find a spare electrician. Electricians may be a lasting tightness. Cashiers may be a residual. Don’t average them into a civilization.
The craft shortage predates all of this. We stopped filling the trades pipeline twenty years ago and the demographics were going to bite regardless.
The service shortage looks like a policy sandwich. Different files, different answers, and the argument keeps using one to explain the other.
Dayton, OH Correspondent — A line that reopened and can’t fill a second shift is looking at a supplement, a child, and a wage that hasn’t moved in ten years. All three can be true.
Residual first. Lasting shift as a hypothesis to test after the residual is removed.
The one thing I’d add is that some of this is us. Manufacturing spent two decades competing on labor cost and treating the workforce as a variable input, and then acted surprised that a generation didn’t want in. The wage that won’t clear at eighteen dollars might clear at twenty-four, and some employers would rather describe a shortage than pay it.
I’d say that as somebody who has been on the hiring side of it.
Tyler, TX Correspondent — East Texas has signs. Some are a boom and some are a residual.
The supplement still exists in enough places to matter and school is still a maybe in enough districts to matter. Those are residuals.
Lasting shift is possible in the crafts, among people who retired early, and among people who moved. What it isn’t is nobody wanting to work, which is a slur that skips a closed cafeteria and a check.
End the supplement, open the school, pay more where you have to, and see who still doesn’t come. That’s the measurement and we haven’t taken it.
Las Vegas, NV Correspondent — Occupancy came back sooner than the roster and that’s the whole local story.
Mostly residual, with a scar that’s larger here than most places. We lost people. A lot of our workforce left the valley in 2020 — went back to family in California, Arizona, the Philippines — and a share of them didn’t return and won’t.
That’s not a reservation wage moving. That’s a population that moved.
I’m paying more and I’d pay more anyway. What I won’t do is file the raise as proof that work is finished while a check that competes with a shift is still being written.
Knoxville, TN Correspondent — A county shop can see a supplement, a child, and a wage that sat still.
Residual first. Lasting shift is a 2022 question.
The public-sector version is worth mentioning because nobody covers it. We can’t hire commercial drivers, water operators, or building inspectors, and we couldn’t before the pandemic either, because the county pay scale is set by a commission that hasn’t adjusted it meaningfully in a decade. No federal supplement caused that and no expiration will fix it.
