Thinking Outside the Boxe has published since 2004. Robert M. Clinger III and Sebastian G. Peréy built it as a place to ask the questions polite company had agreed to leave alone, and to argue the answers in the open.

Sebastian gave Thinking Outside the Boxe much of its character. He spent his career in finance and economics, and he had no patience for a comfortable answer that wasn’t true. Two years after his death in 2011, Conversations on the Bench set down the lessons he shared over the years on benches around Myrtle Beach.

The Annual Symposium and the Champagne Summits grew from the same instinct: put ordinary people at one table, ask them a hard question, and let them argue it out civilly. Correspondents came and went. Their work stayed on the record, and it still does.

In 2018, Thinking Outside the Boxe came under the stewardship of Digger Cartwright, who first sat at the Symposium table in 2007. The mission did not change.
